Jorie's Awesome (And Healthy) BBQ Sauce Recipe
Necessity is the mother of all invention right?
We were getting ready to host friends for dinner the other night and I had an idea about what we were going to serve – tender, slow cooked, Texas Longhorn beef (of course!) but we didn’t have a recipe.
I attempted to find a recipe for a southern style BBQ sauce that would work, but I ran into two dilemmas.
1. Most of the recipes I found were not healthy – a cup of brown sugar here, a can of cola there… not in my kitchen!
2. We didn’t have all the ingredients for the ones that passed my dietary preferences.
So – I got to work, rummaging through our kitchen to find things that looked like they might go into a delicious homemade BBQ sauce.
I wanted to share the sauce with you guys, so that you too can have a plan for that pack of stewing beef, or that big old roast that you’ve been wanting to cook! And, even if you don’t use this exact BBQ sauce recipe, hopefully I’ve inspired you to take a chance and create a sauce of your own!!
This recipe made a hearty amount of sauce, and honestly, I didn’t keep track of how much I made or how much I used. I poured a bunch in the slow cooker (which contained a roast, two packs of stewing beef, and three medium cooking onions) and the rest went into a glass jar in the fridge. We cooked the beef on low for about six hours and then kept the beef on ‘warm’ until we were ready to eat it.

Jorie’s (Necessity) BBQ Sauce
1 cup of balsamic vinegar 13 oz (1 can) of tomato paste 2/3 cup of Dijon mustard ¼ cup of olive oil 1 tablespoon of garlic powder 2 tablespoons of paprika 1 tsp of hot chili powder 1 tsp of cumin 1 tsp of dried sage 1 tsp of died basil 1 tsp of kosher salt 1 tsp of black pepper Option: Add ¼ - ½ cup of honey or maple syrup for a ‘hot & sweet’ style sauce
Mix, and enjoy!
